Michael Biberstein: pressentir a paisagem. caminho atento para construir chão, no Museu Municipal de Faro, parte de uma parceria entre a Associação Artadentro e a Appleton – Associação Cultural, pretendendo constituir-se como a proposta de um olhar integrador lançado à obra deste artista suíço-americano intimamente ligado a Portugal, onde viveu mais de três décadas e onde nos deixou prematuramente em 2013.
No espaço museológico – anteriormente votado ao culto religioso – apresentar-se-ão pinturas, desenhos, esculturas e objectos, organizados de forma não cronológica e circulando de modo não privilegiado entre os diferentes períodos de trabalho do artista: o conceptualismo analítico, fortemente marcado por uma investigação sobre os processos linguísticos e espaciais, ou a produção de génese paisagística pela qual, de resto, Michael Biberstein é amplamente reconhecido.
Perspectiva-se a possibilidade de experienciar o projecto artístico de Michael Biberstein como um todo orgânico, fruto de uma mundividência particular que toma a paisagem na sua condição de encontro potencial de uma qualquer radicalidade que subjaz ao indivíduo, ao mundo e à vida. Esse movimento rumo à paisagem, que se pressente em diferentes intensidades em todo o seu trabalho, é também ele o movimento de um outro pressentimento: aquele que construiu um caminho, de demora e atenção, e que definiu o lugar estético, mas sobretudo ético, do artista. Esse lugar, que Michael Biberstein procurou desenhar com a sua poética, é agora o ponto de partida para que, na exposição, possamos também desenhar o nosso. Um lugar marcado não só por uma afecção espiritual ou uma fissura ontológica, mas que possa ser, também e por isso, um lugar político. Posição daquele que, ao fazer o seu próprio percurso, sente o chão e olha o horizonte.

Michael Biberstein: feeling the landscape. an attentive path to build ground, at the Municipal Museum of Faro, started off as a partnership between Artadentro and Appleton Cultural Association, and intends to constitute itself as the proposal of an integrational gaze into the work of this Swiss-American artist intimately linked to Portugal, where he lived for more than three decades and where he died prematurely in 2013.
In the space of the museum – a former chapel previously consecrated to religious worship – paintings, drawings, sculptures and objects are presented, organized in a non-chronological manner, and circulating unprivileged among the different periods of the artist’s work: analytical conceptualism, strongly marked by a research into linguistic and spatial processes, or the production of landscape genesis for which, moreover, Michael Biberstein is widely recognized.
What is envisaged here is the possibility of experiencing Biberstein’s artistic project as an organic whole, as the result of a particular worldview that takes the landscape in its condition as the potential meeting of any radicality that underlies the individual, the world, and life. This movement towards the landscape, which is present with different intensities in all of his work, is also the movement of another presentiment: one that built a path, of delay and attention, and that defined the aesthetic – but above all ethical – place of the artist. This place, which Michael Biberstein tried to draw with his poetics, is now the starting point from which, in the exhibition, we can draw ours. It is a place marked not only by a spiritual affection or an ontological fissure, but that can also be, for that reason, a political place. The position of the one who, while creating his own path, feels the ground and gazes into the horizon.
